Created in the later stages of Spencer's lifelong career as an artist, Still Life with Apples highlights her exceptional talent in composing still-life paintings. From an early age, Spencer’s family encouraged her artistic talents, recognized by her local community and newspapers alike. Pursuing a career as an artist, moving to Cincinnati at the early age of 20, she often shifted her artistic style to fit market conditions at the time. Creating portraits, landscapes, etchings, drawings, and genre works, her still lives are often deemed the most impressive of her lifelong collection. Still Life with Apples is often believed to be a pair alongside Still Life with Peaches, due to the similar tonality and composition of the two. In both works, Spencer reflects late 19th-century taste, with a thick application of paint and the juxtaposition between the brightness of the fruit and darkness of the background.
