Balcomb Greene
Painter
American, (1904–1990)
Balcomb Greene was an American artist and teacher. He only started painting after travelling to Paris with his new wife, Gertrude Glass Greene, a sculptor. Both were heavily involved in political activism in support of mainstream acceptance of abstract art and were founding members of the American Abstract Artists organization. In his early career, heavily inspired by Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian, Greeneā€™s style was completely non-objective. In his later career starting in the 1940s, he began to experiment with landscapes and figures.
