Paul Wayland Bartlett was born in New Haven, Connecticut to minor sculptor Truman Howe Bartlett. When he was nine years old, in 1874, the family moved to France. Studying art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Bartlett developed a favor for sculpting animals. Throughout his life, he maintained studios in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C, and was often recognized for his ability to perfect a subject's anatomy in his work. Bartlett died in Paris in 1925.
