Cape Cod Times, Saturday, may 21, 1991: Robert Thomas "Tom" Rowlands, 65, a painter and former director of the Cape Cod Art Association, died May 20, 1991, of lung cancer at his home.
Mr. Rowlands was born in Pleasant City, OH. He studied at Parsons School of Desin and Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, all in NYC.
In 1951, during a summer vacation in Hyannis, he entered three of his paintings in an exhibition by the Cape Cod Art Asociation and one of the paintings won honorable mention.
He moved from Salem, OH, to Pittsburgh, and joined the Associated Artist of Pittsburgh.
In 1952, he exhibited at various summer shows in Hyannis for the art association and won first prize in oils. Mr. Rowlands was named director of the association in 1953.
He later joined the Abstract Group in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Rowlands traveled and painted in Europe, Greece, New Orleans, Greensburg, PA, and Pittsburgh.
He exhibited his work in Boston, Pittsburgh, and Greensburg, PA, and won many awards.
Mr. Rowlands was named artist in residence at Westmoreland Museum of Art in Greensburg, PA in 1960.
In 1980, he was a partner in the opening of the Cranberry Moose Restaurant in Yarmouthport, selling his partnership in 1988.
Most recently, Mr. Rowlands was painting in Santa Fe, NM, and his work was exhibited in Boston last year.
Surviving are a brother, Albert Rowlands of Salem, OH; two sisters, Gloria Jean Souder of Columbiana, OH, and Carolyn Crawford of Virginia Beach, VA; eight nieces and nephews and 14 grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Memorial gathering, to be announced at a later date, will be held at his home, 56 Main St., Yarmouthport.
