Alfred Watson
Photographer
American, (1916–2003)
Alfred Watson was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and lived in various locations in this region over his life time. He attended Carnegie institute of Technology and received a B.A. degree in Chemical Engineering and M.S. in Engineering. He worked as a factory safety inspector for Hagan Control Corporation and spent the war years in Franklin, PA where he was transferred. Alfred Watson was not a professional photographer; photography was his avocaton and he spent his life documenting the towns and countryside around him wherever he lived (Franklin, PA, Buffalo, NY, Park Ridge, IL). Watson had a darkroom and printed his own photographs, participating in exhibitions across the U.S. as well as Canada, Austria, England, Spain, Uruguay, Cuba, and Australia. He stopped making photographs at age 65 when he retired in 1981 although he continued to exhibit. The thousands of photographs that Alfred Watson made over the course of his career tell the stories of the country: the Great Depression, industry and city life in Pittsburgh, and farm life in the rural countryside.
