Karl Schrag was born in 1912 in Karlsruhe, Germany. His father was German and his mother American. He graduated from Humanistisches Gymnasium in 1930 and studied art, first in Geneva (his family moved to Zurich in 1931) and then in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, at the Atelier of Lucien Simon, with Roger Bissiere at the Academie Ranson, and at La Grande Chaumiere. In 1938 he came to the United Staes where he studied at the Arts Students' League with Sternberg and at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter.
Mr. Schrag worked in New York and Maine.
He died in New York in 1995.
