Born on April 6, 1820 in Troy, NY, Boutelle worked as a landscapist and portrait painter in New York City in 1846; in Baskingridge, NJ in 1848; in NYC 1851-1855; in Philadelphia, 1855-1857; and in Bethlehem, PA in 1858 and after. He exhibited at the National Academy, of which he was a member, from 1846 through 1874; the PA Academy 1854-1869; the Boston Athenaeum, 1854-1861; the Washington Art Association, 1858-1859; and the American Art Union, 1845-1852. He died at age 64 on the 5th of November, 1884.

Born in Troy, New York, DeWitt Clinton was painting both portraits and landscapes in New York City as early as 1846. There is no record of him receiving formal art training.

In 1855, he left New York, lived in Philadelphia for two years, and then settled for the remainder of his life in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1851, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design where he frequently exhibited. He also exhibited at the American Art Union, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Washington Art Association.

A portrait and landscape painter, De Witt Boutelle was born in Troy, New York in 1820. He was self-taught but highly influenced by Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand. In 1839 he painted his first picture and sold it for $5! and years later bought it back for $50. Until about 1857 he painted almost entirely in the Hudson River Valley, Catskills, New Jersey and along the Susquehanna. In 1855 he permanently settled in Bethlehem, PA.

He was a Member of the Pennsylvania Academy and an associate Member of the National Academy. His exhibitions included the American Art Union, Boston Athenaeum, National Academy, Pennsylvania Academy, Brooklyn Art Association & others.
