American, (April 15, 1915–April 2, 2012)
After being refused acceptance to Carnegie Mellon becuase of her race, Catlett attended Howard University, and later got her masters in sculpture from the University of Iowa (becoming the first woman to do so). After spending some time in New York City, she relocated to Mexico, where she became heavily involved in political activitism.
