Berenice Abbott
American photographer
American, (July 17, 1898–December 9, 1991)
In 1921, Abbott moved to Paris to study sculpture. There, she later became the assistant to photographer Man Ray, which helped start her career in the medium. When she moved to New York City in 1929, she was captivated by the quickly developing city that was on the verge of the Great Depression, and she felt compelled to capture the city with the documentary photographs that she would later be known for (MoMA).

In the 1960's, Abbott moved to Monson, Maine, and photographed this new environment using her same descriptive style. In 1968, those photographs were published in her final book created with friend Chenoweth Hall, called Portrait of Maine (Bates College Museum of Art).
