Abbott was born into a high society New York City family, but went against the grain when she pursued an art career in 1946. She was mentored by fellow Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning and went on to have a "profound impact" on the movement despite never receiving significant recognition. She was mostly inspired by nature; as she moved to places like the Virgin Islands, Haiti, St. Croix, Minnesota, and Southampton, she was constantly inspired by her surroundings. (The New York Times)
